The problems that come with farming.

We try and run a transparent farm. We welcome visitors, and happily answer questions on social media, email and phone calls. But I’m not always great about publishing the trials that come with farming. About a week before christmas we got a big fat kick in the shin. A new neighbor moved in across the street from our farm. They are originally from out of state and have never lived in agricultural area before. The neighbor started calling the Sheriffs Dpt on us. The deputy would come out check on the complaint, tell us everything was fine and leave. The first complaint was that the goats in the field were next to the road and it made him scared to drive. (The goats are great weed eaters and enjoy the cattails that grow along the irrigation canals.) Another complaint was that we must be beating the goats because they can hear them screaming in pain. (If you have ever heard a goat you know that they are loud.) The third complaint was that we must be starving them because he saw them dig in the snow to eat grass (imagin that) the fourth time the nighbor called to complain that their was a dead goat in the field. When the Deputy showed up i was sure he must be mistaken as they were all fine 3 hrs earlier when we had checked on them. We walled out on the 40 acres and sure enough one of my does was dead. She was not sick or thin, she wasn’t tangled on anything or bloated. She was still warm so had just passed and she had some blood coming from her nose and their was a new phone book in the field next to her head with no snow on it. The deputy admitted this was odd but said I couldn’t prove foul play and he had enough complaints about be that he would be charging me. He returned 2 days later and charged me with criminal cruelty to animals. I asked him to explain what grounds he was charging me. He told me to take it up with the judge. He also made us remove all animals from the 38 acres that we lease next to our propert and put all our animals on our 2 acres. This is a property rights violation but we cant do anything about it until we clear up the charges. I have never even had a speeding ticket (really) and now I’m headed to criminal court. I’m confident that we will win our case however this is going to be a long, expensive process. To those that we have shared this with already thank you for your outpouring of love and support. If you would like to help us you can donate on our website or just tell your friends and family who may be interested in ordering meat from us. Thanks
